Housing Choice Voucher Program Overview
The Hammond Housing Authority's Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly known as Section 8) administers
over 700 vouchers in the Hammond, Gary, Whiting, Griffith, and Highland area.
In September, 2006, the
application process was opened. Because of the need to assist low-income families, the wait can be lengthy before eligible
families are selected from the waiting list.
All families selected from the waiting list must be income eligible. All
family members 18 years of age and older must pass a criminal background check. Other screening criteria may also apply.

Billing
Incoming Portability
Hammond
Housing Authority is billing, not absorbing, incoming portable vouchers. (All incoming portable clients must find a
unit in the City of Hammond only.)
Outgoing Portability
In order to transfer to another Housing Authority, the payment
standard (for the eligible bedroom size) must be equal or less than the Hammond Housing Authority's payment standard effective
at that time.
For current applicants:
Changes must be reported IN WRITING within ten (10) days of the change. Changes will
not be accepted via fax or e-mail!
